Camp

water skillsSt. Edmund's students in Years 7-11 enjoy the benefits of experiencing a few days away from school and family. Camp offers a wide range of opportunities for social and physical challenges without neglecting fun.

In 2008 the students attended camp at Tallong and the following points are observations from Mrs Freeman's time spent with the students relayed in a newsletter to parents.

  • The level of independence of some students was remarkable and this was not related to age. I do not underestimate the time and energy you have put into this.
  • On the other hand there are students who need to be supported and encouraged to tackle the whole area of personal care and begin to feel empowered by their independence. When we talk about our students in relation to safety, independence is the first major factor to consider.
  • The sense of fun and motivation of the students is extremely high. They loved being together for the extended time and took every opportunity to laugh and engage with one another and the staff. They were delightful.
  • Some students extended themselves way beyond their comfort zone. For some this was conquering the high ropes course, which I can guarantee was definitely "high", while for others it was climbing the first few rungs on a ladder or walking through the bush with a torch in the dark. For all, regardless of the level of challenge, there was a level of elation at the end.
  • The students are a most positive group. They cheered and celebrated one another's wins regardless of the challenge being faced.
  • They have amazing appetites and were most appreciative of the meals provided. However it's important to know when enough is enough and what clear the table actually means. I'd have to say that knives and forks were used very creatively!
  • The campers (those who slept out in tents) showed a very admirable level of adaptability and initiative. The meal they cooked in their camp ovens was excellent. Without exception they were proud of having braved the elements, the trains and wildlife! Not quite Everest - but close.
  • The quality of the packing was very high; some bags were works of art! Congratulations and thank you. One bag was so beautifully packed the teacher felt compelled to wash an item of clothing before it went back into the bag so as not to disturb the perfection. I did not notice similar behaviour amongst the students.
  • The spirit of the staff of both Tallong and St. Edmund's was very positive and enthusiastic. This remained high despite growing levels of fatigue!

when is it my turn?
