Principal's Message
Proudly there is much about St. Edmund's that is ordinary! For a school catering for over a hundred teenage students with significant disabilities this is a claim worthy of challenge, however we pride ourselves in offering our students what every other student in schools across Australia takes for granted. St. Edmund's operates like any high school. The curriculum is delivered across the day by subject specialists many of whom are also special educators. The curriculum is rich and comes under the umbrella of work education. Our aim is to never lose sight of what our major purpose is - to prepare our students for life after Eddie's.
The feel of Eddie's is that of a regular high school: teenagers being exuberant, social, constant talk, much joking, jostling and always a quiet testing of the boundaries. Well ok, not always that quiet. One compliment that means much to us is that our students don't seem like special school kids!
What is extraordinary about St. Edmund's is the calibre of the students themselves. They are as a school body, hard working, genuinely grateful and excited about what they are learning. They appreciate the very small and their expectations are simple. They have truly learned to appreciate the moment. The relationships between students and staff are unique - always respectful but with an undercurrent of chronic good humour and fun. I hope the picture you're forming is that of a remarkable school! As Principal I feel privileged to be part of Eddie's. There is never a day goes by that a student doesn't lift my spirit in some way. When I enter their classrooms I'm welcomed like a celebrity - where else would you find such warmth?
So here at Eddie's we are proud of the ordinary but we constantly celebrate the extraordinary in life here at Eddie's. Obviously there is much to celebrate!
