Work Experience & TAFE

Students in years 11 & 12 (senior students) at St Edmund's College have unique opportunities to further develop their work skills and study appropriate TVET courses at TAFE.

In Year 11 students commence our Pathways to Work Program which is designed to prepare and enhance a smoother transition into work experience opportunities from Year 12. The Pathways Program consists of various electives that our students rotate through during the year, including Social Skills, Travel Training, Bush Regeneration and Pathways to Work

In Year 12 many senior students travel to workplaces and undertake work experience for 2-3 hours on their alloted day. Depending on the nature of the task, location and organisation some students travel independently and work with minimal supervision whilst some are transported and supported by St Edmund's staff. The aims of the work placement program are to develop independence away from the school setting, to learn about the nature of work in authentic contexts and to widen the students' experiences in order to make better personal choices after leaving school. Communication, working with others and in teams and developing new skills, are all a big part of a St Edmund's students work experience.

Aligned to a student's work experience is their chosen TAFE course. Students in the past have been enrolled in a wide variety of Discrete TVET and Commercial TAFE courses including: Retail, Hospitality, Business Services, Horticulture and Gardening. TAFE provides an excellent bridge and transiton into post-school options, as the focus is on an adult learning environment and industry educators, some of whom work alongside special educators.
