Work Experience & TVET
Work Experience and Tafe Delivered Vocational Education (TVET) at St Edmund's School
Students at St Edmund's School in years 11 & 12 (senior students) have unique opportunities to develop work skills at Tafe and at a wide variety of workplaces, according to their strengths and interests. Each week of the school year the senior students travel to workplaces for 2-3 hours on their allotted day. Some travel independently but most are dropped off by the work placement coordinator. Some workplaces require a supervisor to be present and some students benefit from having a supervisor there to help with understanding the nature of the workplace and the skills required to do a job well.
The aims of the work placement program are to develop independence away from the school setting, to learn about the nature of work in authentic contexts and to widen the students' experiences in order to make better personal choices after leaving school. Communication, working with others and on teams and developing new skills are all a big part of a St Edmund's student's work experience.
Some of our work hosts inlcude: Phil McCarroll's Automotive, IGA Wahroonga, Southern Cross Care, SAN Hospital, Belle Property Group, Fine Cotton Dry Cleaners, House with no Steps, Studio Artes, Wahroonga Prep. School, Clarke & Walker Hornsby and Hornsby RSL.
Aligned to the work experience that students participate in is the TVET course they may opt to complete through the year. Students in the past have been enrolled in a wide variety of non UAI TVET courses, both mainstream and discrete: Retail, Hospitality, Furnishings, Business Services and Kitchen assisting. Work experience placements usually complement the Tafe courses. TVET provides an excellent bridge and transition into post-school options, as the focus is on an adult learning environment and industry educators, some of whom work alongside special educators.
